A link is something that connects one element with another. This simple mechanism works in almost every part of life. The linking of things is an important tool of human perception. It derives from the need for a coherent picture. Hence, “attacks on linking” evokes the damage or interruption of a connection and the isolation of details with the possible effect of short-lasting autonomy for every element. If the linking is fragile, new connections can pop up after a while since pictures are ambiguous.
The exhibition "attacks on linking" shows artworks that deal with individual and collective moments of (self-) representation, and a collective and individual memory. As part of the international project-space exchange, opp_effect, it is concerned with a culturally divergent and swapping context. If the context changes, what else could be implicit to a solo-piece or project idea?
Each one of the participating artists works with the medium video either on aspects of individual introspective or mass-phenomenon. To name a few examples, Khaled Ramadan (Lebanon) uses old family-photos for a very personal story and theory of photography, while Yvon Chabrowski (Germany) alienates the last official interview with H.R.H. the Princess of Wales into a clinical set, which makes an uncommon direct way of seeing the person and her public exposedness possible. Kinda Hassan’s film (Lebanon) turns a collective experience into an individual one and creates personal relationships (with the camera, with a hero, with an observer, a performer, etc.) within the context of a religious ritual. Avi Krispin (Israel/the Netherlands) exhibits "Who is Robert de Niro" with Robert de Niro, while Georg Lisek (Germany) retells his daytime-diary in his "bed-blog" from beneath the pillow.
Fawzy Emrany’s (Palestine/Jordan) work of projections in the large gallery windows deals with the adjustment of out-dated ideologies and Anna Baranowski (Germany) highlights what moves the masses.
The own in the strange? Is everything different? Closing of ranks or converse
argument? What is supposed to be collective and how pre-dominate is the role of identity and individuality in every collective moment?
The opp_effect is a networking work-in-progress project connecting international young artists and curators who assume that a city without art is not imaginable. It will stay open for discussion and exchange; it aims at growing and picking up emerging discourses possibly created by itself. The same holds true for a circulating exhibition. In this case, the non-verbal potential of art is used to connect and interact, to evoke new meanings in diverging contexts and to open up new observable or mental spaces. (JK)
